Species description
Geographical Origin and Habitat: Atlantic estuaries and coastal waters of northern South America, primarily from Venezuela to Brazil. Found on muddy bottoms.
Taxonomy and Morphology: Family Ariidae. Possesses long whisker-like barbels and sharp, venomous spines on its dorsal and pectoral fins. Grows to 35 cm.
Social Behavior: Shoaling catfish that should be kept in groups of 3 or more to encourage active swimming and feeding behavior.
Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Silvery-grey body with golden tones and a clean white underside. No visible differences between sexes.
Care, breeding and tankmates
Aquarium Setup: Large tank of at least 400 liters. Soft sand substrate is critical to prevent damage to barbels. Keep decorations minimal.
Diet and Feeding: Benthic carnivore. Feed high-protein sinking pellets, chopped shrimp, mussels, and whitebait.
Water Quality: Requires brackish (SG 1.008-1.015) or marine water. High oxygenation and powerful canister filtration are essential.
Compatibility and Cohabitation: Pair with large brackish fish like scats, monos, and adult archerfish. Small tankmates will be eaten.
Aquarium Breeding: Paternal mouthbrooder. Captive breeding has not been documented due to space constraints.
Risks and Diseases: Venomous fin spines. Be extremely careful during handling. Prone to bacterial fin rot if water quality drops.
