Species description
Geographical Origin and Habitat: Native to Peru, in the Ucayali River basin. Inhabits small slow-moving rainforest streams with sandy beds covered in organic litter.
Taxonomy and Morphology: Belonging to the family Cichlidae. Features a relatively deep body for the genus. Males reach 7.0 cm, while females grow to 5.0 cm.
Social Behavior: Territorial bottom dweller. Recommended to be kept in established pairs. Males will defend their cave sites from rivals.
Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Males display a base of greyish-blue with distinct yellow cheeks and orange accents on the fins. Females turn yellow with black markings when breeding.
Care, breeding and tankmates
Aquarium Setup: An 80-liter tank with fine sand is essential. Structure the tank with driftwood, caves, and plants to break lines of sight and reduce territorial disputes.
Diet and Feeding: Carnivorous. Feeds best on small live or frozen foods like brine shrimp and daphnia. High-quality dry foods can be offered once acclimated.
Water Quality: Prefers soft, acidic to neutral water. Keep temperature at 22-26 °C, pH at 5.5-6.8, and hardness at 2-8 dGH. Good filtration is necessary.
Compatibility and Cohabitation: Keep with small, peaceful fish like tetras. Avoid keeping with other territorial cave-dwelling species to prevent disputes over shelters.
Aquarium Breeding: Cave spawner. The female deposits eggs in a secure cave, handles all brood care, and becomes highly aggressive toward all intruders.
Risks and Diseases: Sensitive to poor substrate cleanliness and high nitrate levels. Prone to intestinal issues if fed incorrect foods.
