Geographical Origin and Habitat: Native to Bolivia, primarily in the Guaporé and Mamoré River basins. Inhabits slow-moving streams and flooded areas rich in vegetation.
Taxonomy and Morphology: A member of the Cichlidae family. Standard dwarf cichlid profile. Males reach a length of 6.5 cm; females are smaller.
Social Behavior: Territorial bottom-dwelling species. Forms monogamous pairs. Both parents participate in defending the territory around the cave.
Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Males show a blue-tinted body with beautiful red markings on the tail fin. Females are smaller and turn bright yellow when breeding.
Care, breeding and tankmates
Aquarium Setup: Provide an 80-liter aquarium with a soft sandy substrate, numerous caves, and dense plants. visual barriers like rocks and wood are recommended.
Diet and Feeding: Carnivorous. Provide high-quality live and frozen foods such as brine shrimp, daphnia, and bloodworms. Flakes are accepted after transition.
Water Quality: Keep parameters stable. Temperature 24-28 °C, pH 6.0-7.2, and hardness 3-10 dGH. Good filtration with weekly water changes.
Compatibility and Cohabitation: Good companion for peaceful tetras, hatchetfish, and small catfish. Keep only one male per aquarium unless the tank is very large.
Aquarium Breeding: Cave spawner. The female takes care of the eggs inside the cave, while the male guards the perimeter of the territory.
Risks and Diseases: Susceptible to external parasites if water quality fluctuates or in high-stress environments.
