Species description
Geographical Origin and Habitat: Native to northern Peru. Found in slow-moving forest streams and shallow margins with clear or tea-colored water and thick layers of leaf litter.
Taxonomy and Morphology: Member of the Cichlidae family. Described in 2006 and named after the Inca prince Huáscar. Recognized by distinct abdominal bands composed of vertical spots.
Social Behavior: Territorial. Exhibits polygamous behavior; males defend territories that overlap with those of multiple females.
Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Males display golden-yellow chests, iridescent facial patterns, and long, elegant dorsal/anal fins. Females are smaller, turning bright yellow when breeding.
Care, breeding and tankmates
Aquarium Setup: Set up with fine sand substrate, driftwood branches, leaf litter, and several small caves to establish territories.
Diet and Feeding: Carnivorous. Requires live or frozen foods such as brine shrimp, daphnia, and cyclops. Sinking pellets are accepted with time.
Water Quality: Demands soft (GH < 6) and acidic water (pH 5.0-6.8). Regular water changes are critical to maintain very low nitrates.
Compatibility and Cohabitation: Peaceful with dither fish like tetras and pencilfish. Avoid housing with aggressive bottom dwellers.
Aquarium Breeding: Cave spawner. The female deposits eggs on the ceiling of a cave and defends the brood; soft water is crucial for egg hatching.
Risks and Diseases: Sensitive to chemical treatments and poor water quality. Susceptible to internal parasites and skin infections.
