Species description
The species Ammannia pedicellata is native to the wetlands and riverbanks of East Africa, particularly in Tanzania and Mozambique, where it grows in both emersed and submersed forms along tropical watercourses. In its natural environment, it is typically found in slow-flowing or stagnant waters, such as swamps, ponds, and tropical riverbanks, where it adapts beautifully to seasonal water level variations. This habitat provides a rich organic substrate and consistent, filtered light exposure. The plant's ability to grow both submersed and emersed is a testament to its extraordinary evolutionary resilience in these humid ecosystems. From a taxonomic perspective, the plant belongs to the genus Ammannia within the family Lythraceae.
Care, breeding and tankmates
This species prefers a temperature range between 22 and 28 °C, soft to moderately hard water with a KH of 2-12 and an acidic to neutral pH between 5.0 and 7.0. Regular water changes are recommended to maintain stable parameters and low levels of pollutants such as nitrates and phosphates. Good mechanical and biological filtration will ensure an environment free of suspended particles, which could settle on the leaves and limit photosynthesis. The main risks include iron deficiency causing chlorosis (pale leaves) and sensitivity to fluctuations in chemical parameters which can lead to stem rot. Under conditions of poor water movement or nutrient imbalance, the leaves can be colonized by filamentous or green spot algae.

- Midground, Background
Best suited for the midground or background. It makes a stunning group planting, but ensure individual stems are spaced slightly apart to allow light to penetrate the lower leaves.
Noted for its striking color contrast: vibrant yellow-green to golden leaves paired with thick, fleshy, hot-pink or red stems. The leaves are relatively large and lanceolate.
Grows at a moderate rate under strong lighting and CO2. Its steady growth is easily managed, making it a reliable structural plant for aquascapes.
Ammannia pedicellata develops a reliable root system that thrives in moderately enriched substrates. A dedicated aquarium soil is highly beneficial, as it allows the roots to extract necessary trace elements while providing a soft medium for rapid expansion. Planting in a substrate layer of at least 5 centimeters ensures that its stems remain securely anchored as they grow toward the light. The addition of iron-rich root tabs will further promote robust stems and healthy leaf coloration.
Regular liquid fertilization is essential. Dosing potassium and iron heavily will keep the stems thick and prevent the golden leaves from turning pale or developing holes.
Benefits significantly from a nutrient-rich substrate. Root tabs or high-quality aquasoil will encourage strong root development and thicker, healthier vertical growth.
Prune by topping and replanting the heads. The sturdy lower stems will quickly sprout new side branches, allowing you to create dense, golden bushes over time.
Easily propagated through stem cuttings. Snip off a healthy side shoot or top portion and plant it deeply into the substrate. Roots form readily within a few days.
Can be sensitive to sudden shifts in water parameters. If shaded or lacking nutrients, the lower leaves will quickly blacken and fall off, leaving bare stems.
Provides an outstanding color contrast against both standard green and deep red plants. Its golden-yellow foliage acts as a bright focal point in Dutch and nature aquariums.
