Species description
Cabomba piauhyensis is native to the tropical and subtropical regions of Central and South America, where it colonizes stagnant or very slow-flowing bodies of water. It is particularly common in Brazil, Colombia, and Venezuela, growing in clear, shallow waters that are typically low in dissolved minerals but rich in acidic organic matter. In these habitats, it receives direct and prolonged sun exposure, which stimulates its vigorous growth and characteristic red The primary feature is the intense red-purple or deep pink color of the submerged foliage under optimal lighting. The texture of the leaves is extremely soft and feathery, creating a strong visual contrast with broad-leaved plants or hardscape in the aquarium. The stems show shades ranging from dark red to brown, completing the unique aesthetic profile of this species.
Care, breeding and tankmates
It prefers very soft and acidic water, with an optimal pH between 5.0 and 7.0 and a KH below 6 dKH. The water temperature should be kept stable between 22°C and 28°C; sudden changes or low temperatures can halt growth or cause the stems to dissolve. It is sensitive to transplant shock and rapid changes in water parameters, which can cause premature leaf loss. The accumulation of organic debris within the feathery leaves can suffocate the plant and promote hair algae, which is difficult to remove without damaging the leaf structure.

Ideally suited for the background of a planted aquarium where its tall stems can reach toward the light. Its striking color provides an excellent focal point when planted in groups. Care should be taken not to shade it with other tall plants.
Features highly divided, feathery leaves that grow in opposite pairs or whorls along the stem. It develops a stunning pink to purplish-red color under intense illumination. The delicate foliage creates a soft, textured appearance in the aquascape.
Grows very rapidly when its high demands for light, CO2, and nutrients are met. In optimal conditions, it can quickly reach the water surface and may require frequent trimming. Suboptimal conditions will severely slow its growth and cause it to lose leaves.
Highly dependent on water column fertilization to meet its nutritional needs. A comprehensive liquid fertilizer regime is mandatory for its survival and best coloration. Iron supplementation is particularly critical to prevent the leaves from turning pale green or yellow.
While it draws most nutrients from the water column, a fertile substrate can provide an additional nutrient reserve. Root tabs can aid in establishing a strong root system, which helps anchor the plant. However, substrate fertilization alone is insufficient for this demanding species.
Trim by topping the plant, cutting the stem just above a leaf node. Replant the healthy top portion to maintain the vibrant color and replace older, potentially deteriorating lower stems. Leaving the bottom portion may encourage branching, but the lower stem often loses its aesthetic appeal.
Easily propagated through taking stem cuttings from healthy growth. Plant the cuttings directly into the substrate, ensuring they have sufficient space and light. The cuttings will quickly develop roots and resume active growth if conditions are right.
Considered a very demanding and difficult plant to grow. It is highly sensitive to fluctuations in water chemistry, poor water circulation, and insufficient lighting. Soft, slightly acidic water is practically a requirement for long-term success.
Acts as a dramatic and colorful background accent in Dutch and nature-style aquascapes. Its bright purplish-red hues contrast beautifully with vibrant green plants. Due to its difficulty, it is often considered a showpiece plant for experienced aquascapers.
