Species description

Geographical Origin and Habitat: East Africa and Madagascar. Found in lowland marshes, riverbanks, and seasonally flooded wetlands.

Taxonomy & Genetics: Family Lythraceae, genus Nesaea (frequently reclassified as Ammannia pedicellata). Features opposite, oblong leaves.

Physical Structure: A sturdy upright stem plant. The stems are relatively thick and fleshy, growing up to 35 cm in height.

Color & Texture: Showcases striking golden-yellow leaves that contrast beautifully with its deep pinkish-red stem.

Care, breeding and tankmates

Lighting & CO2: Requires high-intensity lighting to maintain its golden hue. High CO2 levels are essential for preventing stem deterioration.

Nutrition & Substrate: Benefits from a rich substrate. Highly sensitive to potassium excess, which causes curling of the new leaves. Balance with calcium/magnesium.

Water Chemistry: Prefers soft, slightly acidic water. Maintain pH at 5.5-7.5 and water temperature in the range of 21-28 °C.

Space Management & Placement: Plant in small groups in the background. Leave ample space between stems to prevent lower-leaf shedding due to shadows.

Pruning: Cut the top half of mature stems and replant them. Ensure scissors are very sharp to avoid crushing the fleshy stems.

Risks & Diseases: Stems can easily turn black and rot if crushed during planting or if subjected to sudden water parameter shocks.

Trimming
