Species description

Geographical Origin and Habitat: Native to Asia (India, China, Japan). Frequently found in wet rice paddies, marshes, and river edges.

Taxonomy & Genetics: Member of the Lythraceae family. Commonly confused in the trade with Rotala rotundifolia.

Physical Structure: Thin-stemmed upright plant with opposite, rounded to lanceolate leaves under submersed conditions.

Color & Texture: Bright green foliage that turns pinkish-red near the tips under high light intensity and proper fertilization.

Care, breeding and tankmates

Lighting & CO2: Requires medium to high lighting. CO2 dosing is highly recommended to promote compact, reddish growth.

Nutrition & Substrate: Benefits from both column and root fertilization. Ensure adequate levels of iron and potassium.

Water Chemistry: Adaptable to a wide range of water parameters, preferring pH 5.0-7.5 and tropical temperatures.

Space Management & Placement: Best planted in groups in the midground or background. Needs regular trimming to prevent base shadow.

Pruning: Pinch the tops regularly to promote branching and create a dense, bushy appearance.

Risks & Diseases: Lower leaves may shed if light cannot reach the bottom due to dense planting or low light levels.
