Species description

Geographical Origin and Habitat: Southern and eastern Asia. Found in wetlands, rice paddies, and shallow pools. Used as a culinary herb in Vietnamese cuisine.

Taxonomy & Genetics: Belonging to the family Plantaginaceae, genus Limnophila. Emits a distinct herbal scent when its leaves are crushed.

Physical Structure: An upright, sturdy stem plant. Leaves are lanceolate with serrated margins, arranged in whorls along the stem.

Color & Texture: Upper leaf surface is light olive-green, while the underside exhibits beautiful pink to deep purple colors under high light.

Care, breeding and tankmates

Lighting & CO2: Requires high-intensity lighting. CO2 injection is recommended to support its rapid growth rate and color development.

Nutrition & Substrate: Thrives in nutrient-rich substrate. High iron levels and regular liquid micro-nutrient dosing are critical for intense purple coloration.

Water Chemistry: Prefers soft, slightly acidic water. Keep pH at 5.5-7.5 and water temperature between 22 and 28 °C.

Space Management & Placement: Best planted in groups in the background. Space the stems out to prevent shading of the lower sections.

Pruning: Prune top shoots to encourage branching. Cuttings can be replanted into the substrate to create a larger, denser bush.

Risks & Diseases: Shaded lower leaves will yellow and drop off if light levels are too low. Prone to algae if nitrates and phosphates are out of balance.
