Species description
Geographical Origin and Habitat: Native to South America (Paraná River basin), it has spread globally as a noxious weed in ponds and slow waterways.
Taxonomy & Genetics: Genus Alternanthera, family Amaranthaceae. Renowned for its exceptional ability to propagate clonally from tiny fragments.
Physical Structure: Develops hollow creeping or erect stems that form dense, interwoven mats over the water surface. Roots sprout easily at nodes.
Color & Texture: Opposite, lanceolate, bright green leaves, which can display copper tones under very high light. Flowers are clover-like white heads.
Care, breeding and tankmates
Lighting & CO2: Demands high light intensity to prevent spindly, leggy stem growth. CO2 injection is optional but supports its fast growth rate.
Nutrition & Substrate: Undemanding of substrate quality. It is a heavy water column feeder, highly efficient at absorbing excess nitrates.
Water Chemistry: Extremely hardy. Tolerates a broad pH range (6.0 - 8.0) and water temperatures from 15°C to 28°C.
Space Management & Placement: Position in the background. Due to its aggressive growth, it must be contained to prevent shading out other plants.
Pruning: Prune frequently by cutting the stems. Carefully collect and discard all trimmings, as even tiny fragments can root and spread.
Risks & Diseases: Highly disease-resistant. Extreme ecological risk: never release this plant or its cuttings into local waterways.
