Species description

Geographical Origin and Habitat: Widely distributed throughout tropical and subtropical regions worldwide. Grows along the margins of ponds, rivers, rice paddies, and damp ditches, both submerged and emersed.

Taxonomy & Genetics: Family Amaranthaceae, genus Alternanthera. A hardy, highly adaptable plant that is considered invasive in many regions outside its native range.

Physical Structure: Herbaceous stem plant with erect or creeping growth. The lanceolate or elliptic leaves are sessile (lacking a petiole) and opposite.

Color & Texture: Features bright green foliage that develops bronze or reddish tints under high light levels. The leaf texture is soft and herbaceous.

Care, breeding and tankmates

Lighting & CO2: Requires medium to high lighting to keep growth compact and prevent leggy stems. CO2 injection is highly recommended if grown fully submerged in aquariums.

Nutrition & Substrate: Needs a nutrient-rich substrate (aquasoil or fertile dirt). Benefits from regular liquid fertilization rich in iron and micronutrients.

Water Chemistry: Prefers soft to moderately hard water, pH between 6.0 and 7.5, and temperatures of 20-28°C (68-82°F).

Space Management & Placement: Best placed in the midground or background of the aquarium, or as a marginal plant in paludariums. Grows very quickly when emersed.

Pruning: Trim regularly by cutting the stem tips to encourage bushy lateral branching. Stem cuttings can be easily replanted to propagate the plant.

Risks & Diseases: Struggles to survive long-term when fully submerged; it may "melt" or shed lower leaves if light levels and nutrient supplementation are inadequate.
