Species description
The species Limnophila sp. "Vietnam" is native to the shallow swamplands, ditches, and wet plains of Vietnam, growing in muddy banks exposed to the sun. In its natural environment, it is typically found in slow-flowing or stagnant waters, such as swamps, ponds, and tropical riverbanks, where it adapts beautifully to seasonal water level variations. This habitat provides a rich organic substrate and consistent, filtered light exposure. The plant's ability to grow both submersed and emersed is a testament to its extraordinary evolutionary resilience in these humid ecosystems.
Care, breeding and tankmates
This species prefers soft and slightly acidic water with temperature between 15 and 30 °C, pH between 4.5 and 7.0, and a carbonate hardness (KH) between 0 and 7. Regular water changes are recommended to maintain stable parameters and low levels of pollutants such as nitrates and phosphates. Good mechanical and biological filtration will ensure an environment free of suspended particles, which could settle on the leaves and limit photosynthesis. The main risks include suffocation from organic debris accumulation among the dense leaves, and leaf yellowing in case of shading. Under conditions of poor water movement or nutrient imbalance, the leaves can be colonized by filamentous or green spot algae.

This species is best suited for the foreground or midground of the aquarium depending on the tank size. Its creeping nature allows it to spread horizontally across the substrate when provided with intense lighting. It can also be planted in dense groups to create a lush, bushy focal point.
It is a delicate stem plant with finely divided, needle-like leaves arranged in whorls along the stem. The leaves are typically a vibrant, light green that contrasts beautifully with darker plants. When grown under high light, it tends to creep along the substrate, forming a dense carpet.
Under optimal conditions, this plant exhibits a moderately fast growth rate. High light and CO2 injection will significantly accelerate its horizontal spread and lateral branching. In low light setups, its growth will be noticeably slower and more upright.
Limnophila sp. "Vietnam" flourishes best when provided with a nutrient-rich aquarium soil that supports its creeping, carpet-forming growth habit. The plant develops a dense, robust root system that securely anchors its delicate stems into fine or medium-grained substrates. A substrate depth of at least 2 to 3 inches is recommended to allow the roots to absorb essential macronutrients directly from the bottom layer. While it can adapt to inert gravel if supplemented with root tabs, a dedicated aquatic soil significantly enhances its vigorous growth and lush coloration.
Regular dosing of liquid fertilizers into the water column is highly recommended for optimal health. Potassium and trace elements should be maintained at adequate levels to support its fast metabolism. Consistent column fertilization prevents lower leaf shedding and promotes robust lateral shoots.
While it draws many nutrients from the water column, it benefits greatly from a nutrient-rich substrate. Root tabs can be inserted near the base of the stems to boost growth and root development. A fertile substrate ensures long-term vitality, especially in densely planted areas.
Frequent trimming is often necessary to maintain its shape and encourage bushy growth. The creeping stems can be cut and replanted to expand the carpet or bush. Regular pruning prevents the lower portions of the plant from being shaded out and dying off.
Propagation is easily achieved by taking stem cuttings and replanting them into the substrate. The cuttings will quickly develop new roots and continue to grow. Lateral shoots can also be carefully separated and replanted.
Limnophila sp. Vietnam can be sensitive to sudden changes in water parameters or significant drops in CO2 levels. Algae can easily accumulate on its fine leaves if the nutrient balance is off. It may melt if exposed to severe nutrient deficiencies or inadequate lighting.
It serves as an excellent transitional plant between the foreground and background. Its creeping habit makes it an ideal candidate for creating textured foreground carpets in larger tanks. In smaller aquariums, it works beautifully as a delicate midground accent.
