Species description
Endemic to Madagascar, where it grows in warm, stagnant, or slow-moving waters such as swamps, marshes, and quiet pools. It is adapted to intense tropical sunlight and organic-rich substrates. Belonging to the family Plantaginaceae. The genus Hydrotriche is specialized for aquatic environments, and hottoniiflora is known for its emersed yellow flowers that resemble those of the genus Hottonia. Slocum-like hollow, fleshy stems that float if unanchored.
Care, breeding and tankmates
Prefers soft, acidic water with a pH of 5.0 to 7.0. It is a thermophilic species that tolerates very high temperatures up to 34°C (93°F), but will quickly decline below 18°C (64°F). Vulnerable to cold temperatures and lack of CO2, which cause the stems to turn black and rot. Hair algae can easily colonize its fine leaves during nutrient imbalances.

- Midground, Background
This species is ideally suited for the background due to its potential for vertical growth. Its needle-like leaves create a soft, textured look in the aquarium. It should be placed where it will not be overshadowed by broader, taller plants.
The plant displays an upright stem structure with delicate, needle-like leaves arranged in whorls. Its light green foliage closely resembles terrestrial pine needles. It occasionally produces small yellow flowers if allowed to breach the water surface.
It grows at a moderate to fast pace when provided with optimal conditions. High lighting and CO2 injection will significantly boost its upward momentum. Its rapid vertical growth means regular maintenance will be needed.
Liquid fertilization is a primary requirement for this aquatic species. It actively draws macronutrients and micronutrients directly through its leaves. A well-balanced liquid fertilizer routine is the best way to support its health.
Root feeding is a secondary but helpful aspect of its care. A quality aquasoil or strategically placed root tabs will provide foundational nutrients. It establishes a surprisingly strong root system over time.
To manage its height, simply cut the top portions of the stem with sharp aquascaping scissors. The rooted bottom part will often sprout side shoots, leading to bushier growth. Replanting the tops is an effective way to multiply the stand.
Propagation is straightforward and relies on taking stem cuttings. Cut a healthy upper shoot and bury the lowest nodes into the substrate. It roots quickly and begins upward growth within a few days.
It can be quite sensitive to sudden shifts in water chemistry or temperature. Insufficient lighting will quickly cause the lower portions of the stem to rot and drop leaves. Algae buildup on its fine leaves can also inhibit its growth.
It serves as an excellent textured background plant in various aquascaping styles. The fine leaves contrast beautifully with rounder, broader foliage. Grouping them closely together forms a lush, pine-like forest effect.
