Species description

Geographical Origin and Habitat: Endemic to Madagascar. Grows in shallow waters along the edges of ponds, lakes, and slow streams, adapting to both submerged and emersed growth.

Taxonomy & Genetics: Member of the Plantaginaceae family and Bacopa genus. Features erect, fleshy stems with opposite leaf pairs arranged along the stem.

Physical Structure: Fleshy, upright stems that grow straight upwards towards the surface. Leaves are small, rounded, and ovate.

Color & Texture: Bright light green foliage. The leaves have a smooth, slightly waxy texture to the touch.

Care, breeding and tankmates

Lighting & CO2: Medium to high light demand. Insufficient light leads to thin, leggy stems and leaf loss near the base. CO2 injection is helpful but not mandatory.

Nutrition & Substrate: Prefers a fertile substrate. Regular liquid fertilization with iron and trace elements keeps the stems robust.

Water Chemistry: Adaptable to soft and medium-hard water. Temperature range 18-26°C, pH 6.0-7.5. Avoid keeping them in tanks with water above 27°C long-term.

Space Management & Placement: Ideal for the midground or background of medium aquariums. Looks best when planted in stepped groups of several stems.

Pruning: Trim the stems at the desired height. Replant the cut tops directly into the substrate to easily propagate new plants.

Risks & Diseases: Stem rot if planted in overly compacted, oxygen-starved substrate. Sensitive to sudden nutrient deficiencies.
