Species description
Geographical Origin and Habitat: Native to Southeastern Asia, growing in shallow stagnant waters or slow-moving acidic forest pools.
Taxonomy & Genetics: Genus Rotala, family Lythraceae. Described as a delicate herbaceous wetland stem plant.
Physical Structure: Develops thin, vertical stems with dense whorled needle-like leaves, creating a very feathery appearance underwater.
Color & Texture: Under optimal conditions, displays vibrant pink, red, or bronze coloration. Leaves are extremely fine and soft to the touch.
Care, breeding and tankmates
Lighting & CO2: Requires high-intensity lighting and stable CO2 injection (20-30 mg/L) to prevent leaf loss and drive the red coloration.
Nutrition & Substrate: Fertile substrate is preferred. Demands regular dosing of iron and microelements. Keep nitrates low but not zero.
Water Chemistry: Soft, acidic water is vital (pH 5.5 - 7.0, low GH). It performs poorly in hard, alkaline water conditions.
Space Management & Placement: Best planted in groups in the midground or background. Ensure it receives direct light without shading.
Pruning: Trim the top shoots regularly. Replant the cut stems to encourage branching and maintain a lush, compact thicket.
Risks & Diseases: Highly vulnerable to filamentous algae which can choke the thin leaves. Stems will rot from the bottom if shaded.
