Species description

Geographical Origin and Habitat: Native to the flooded forests and streams of the Loreto Department in Peru. Found hiding in leaf litter in soft waters.

Taxonomy and Morphology: Formally described in 2013, previously known as Apistogramma sp. 'Masken'. Males grow to 5 cm, females around 4 cm.

Social Behavior: Moderately aggressive during breeding season. Actively defends its benthic territory against other bottom dwellers.

Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Features a dark 'mask' pattern on the head. Males show blue-green shades and pointed fins. Females turn bright yellow when breeding.

Care, breeding and tankmates

Aquarium Setup: A minimum of 60 liters for a pair. Fine sand substrate is necessary alongside driftwood and leaf litter to break lines of sight.

Diet and Feeding: Carnivorous. Feeds primarily on live or frozen foods. Will accept high-quality sinking carnivore pellets after acclimatization.

Water Quality: Keep pH between 4.0 and 7.0, and GH between 2 and 10. Pristine water conditions are required; carry out regular changes.

Compatibility and Cohabitation: Best kept with small surface-dwelling tetras and pencilfish. Avoid keeping them with large or rowdy species.

Aquarium Breeding: Cave spawner. Female deposits eggs inside narrow caves and guards the clutch, showing highly defensive parenting behavior.

Risks and Diseases: Highly sensitive to rapid pH shifts and high nitrates. Vulnerable to stress if the aquarium lacks shaded cover.
