Species description

Geographical Origin and Habitat: Native to Venezuela, specifically in the Rio Caroní and other tributaries of the Orinoco. Found in rocky habitats with sandy substrates and varying current flows.

Taxonomy and Morphology: Member of the Cichlidae family, Geophaginae subfamily. Possesses a deep, robust body with an under-slung mouth designed for sifting sand.

Social Behavior: Peaceful cichlid that forms hierarchies. Best kept in groups of 5-6 individuals in order to spread minor conspecific aggression.

Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Golden-grey base color with blue highlights and a distinct vertical black stripe passing through the eye. Males grow larger and have longer fin filaments.

Care, breeding and tankmates

Aquarium Setup: A fine sand substrate is critical as they sift sand continuously. Add rounded river stones and driftwood to create caves.

Diet and Feeding: Omnivorous. Provide high-quality sinking pellets, flakes, and regular feedings of frozen artemia and bloodworms.

Water Quality: Requires well-oxygenated water with strong filtration. Water parameters should be soft and slightly acidic (pH 5.5-7.0).

Compatibility and Cohabitation: Combines well with medium-sized tetras, hatchetfish, and peaceful catfish. Avoid aggressive tankmates.

Aquarium Breeding: Cave spawner. Both parents guard the eggs deposited inside a cave and care for the fry aggressively against tankmates.

Risks and Diseases: Sensitive to high nitrate levels. Poor water conditions can lead to lateral line erosion and stress-induced diseases.
