Starlight Bristlenose Pleco (L183)

Ancistrus dolichopterus

The Starlight Bristlenose Pleco (*Ancistrus dolichopterus* or L183) is the sparkling gem of the Ancistrus family. Not to be confused with the common and less conspicuous *Ancistrus sp.* (often fraudulently sold under the same name), the authentic L183 is distinguished by an ink-black body sprinkled with hundreds of tiny, brilliant white dots, completed by an unmistakable and marked milk-white hem on the dorsal and caudal fins that never fades with age. A splendid algae eater, it is an inhabitant of dark waters that combines utility with top-level aesthetics.

Description

Geographic Origin and Biotope: Authentic inhabitant of the Rio Negro basin and the Trombetas river in the Amazon. Unlike common commercial Ancistrus, it lives in very dark waters (Blackwater) loaded with tannins, highly acidic and devoid of carbonate hardness.

Taxonomy and Morphology: Starlight Bristlenose Pleco (identified with the L-number code L183). Wonderful and unmistakable: reaches 12 cm (4.7 inches). Possesses one more hard ray on the dorsal fin compared to the cirrhosus (9 rays instead of 8).

Social Behavior: Very shy and distinctly nocturnal. Fears bright light, remaining firmly glued to the hidden side of submerged roots all day long. Less impetuous than its common cousin, but males do not tolerate conspecifics of the same sex.

Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Unequaled aesthetics (true Starlight): the body is inky black or very deep blue, dotted with very bright and distinct snow-white dots that look like stars. The margins of the dorsal and caudal fin have a thick and blazing white edge, which remains in adults. The male shows off the iconic "beard".

Care and observations

Aquarium Setup: Fundamental to recreate the Blackwater environment. Tank over 80 cm (32 inches). Very dim light filtered by floating plants. Sandy bottom, non-calcareous stones and a tangle of huge bogwood branches. Add catappa leaves and alder cones to acidify the water.

Diet and Feeding: Predominantly algae-eater but more omnivorous than the cirrhosus. Has a constant need to nibble on soft woods. Provide vegetable sinking tablets, zucchini, but also rare quality protein snacks like krill and brine shrimp (only at night).

Water Quality: Very demanding (not a fish for reckless beginners). DOES NOT tolerate hard tap water. Needs very pure RO water: KH 0-2, GH 1-8, very low pH (5.5 - 7.0). Warm (24-28°C / 75-82°F) and pristine water.

Compatibility and Tankmates: The ultimate Ancistrus for advanced South American biotope tanks. Ideal pairing with Symphysodon (Discus), rare Apistogramma, small demanding Tetras (Cardinals). Any voracious tankmate (e.g. Botia) will starve it by terrorizing it.

Aquarium Reproduction: Complex. Requires perfect chemical values, a very narrow tubular cave exactly the size of the male and the introduction of cold RO water to simulate rain and induce spawning. The little Starlights are born already gorgeous, black and dotted with white.

Risks and Diseases: High risk of losing the white-edged livery if swapped and crossed with other Ancistrus (e.g. L071 or the common cirrhosus). Extremely intolerant to medicines and organic accumulations (dies quickly in neglected aquariums).

Fish profile

Temperament
Pacifico verso le altre specie. Estremamente territoriale verso gli altri maschi di Ancistrus per il dominio delle grotte migliori.
Diet
Onnivoro tendenzialmente erbivoro/xilofago.
