Description
Geographic Origin and Biotope: Belonging to the large Xingu River basin in Brazil, known habitat of many specialized Loricariids (e.g. Zebra Pleco). Inhabits strong currents and rapids among large porous boulders of volcanic and granitic rock in clear, warm waters.
Taxonomy and Morphology: Meandrinus Pleco (Hemiancistrus meandrinus / L500). Sometimes classified as Peckoltia, it features a stocky body, arched back, and the typical mouth of a benthic omnivore/scraper. Eyes adapted to the low light of the depths.
Social Behavior: Cryptic animal. Generally holed up tightly in cracks or among rocks by day. It will often gruffly defend its cave (though rarely injuring others) from conspecifics and other Loricariids.
Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Beautiful hypnotic pattern: light yellow/orange or cream background covered by a tight and intricate "meandering" labyrinth (hence the name) of dark-brown lines. Mature males with strong fuzz (odontodes) on the first ray of the fins.
Care and observations
Aquarium Setup: Needs many ceramic, slate, or natural rock caves, in a "River Manifold" setup with very high flow and strong aeration. Keep lighting subdued to encourage open-field foraging.
Diet and Feeding: Not a strict algae eater, but an "Aufwuchs grazer" leaning towards carnivore. The basic diet should consist of protein tablets for bottom fish, enriched with bloodworms, peeled shrimp, mussel, and occasional zucchini.
Water Quality: Absolutely pristine water quality. Requires high tropical temperatures (25-29°C / 77-84°F) combined with saturation oxygen. Nitrate accumulation (above 20 ppm) is intolerable for this demanding species.
Compatibility and Tankmates: Excellent with lively Characins that tolerate strong current and high temperatures. Should not be mixed with larger, aggressive Loricariids (Panaque, Pseudacanthicus) that would preclude it from food or steal hiding places.
Aquarium Reproduction: Reproduces in typical cave-spawning style. Triggered by conductivity variations (RO changes). The male cares for the fertilized brood hiding it in the den, but fry require intensive nutrition.
Risks and Diseases: Species from the Xingu are fragile if exposed to cold drafts or ammonia. The absence of caves leads to extreme stress, culminating in loss of appetite and atrophy of the digestive tract (sunken belly).
