Description
Geographic Origin and Biotope: Originating from the Rio Claro, in the upper Paraguay basin (State of Mato Grosso, Brazil). Lives among sunny inlets and rocky bottoms covered in algae.
Taxonomy and Morphology: Gold Marble Bristlenose / LDA08 (Ancistrus claro). One of the tiniest Ancistrus in aquarium keeping (barely reaches 7 cm / 2.7 inches). Flattened profile and facial bristles much reduced compared to the "common" counterpart.
Social Behavior: A tiny pixie. Incredibly less shy and lethargic than other plecos: spends hours and hours in the spotlight grazing on the front glass or on rocks in broad daylight.
Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Stunning aesthetics: intricate marbled livery consisting of a dark background broken by yellow, pale gold or burnt orange reticulations (Gold Marble). Even in this dwarf species, the mature male exhibits branched bristles on the snout, absent in the female.
Care and observations
Aquarium Setup: Given the mini-size, it can live in 60-80 cm (24-32 inches) tanks. Essential an artificial reef of round stones, small spawning tubes (otherwise they refuse them) and soft wood twigs to scrape.
Diet and Feeding: Convinced algae eater. Quickly empties the tank of green and brown algae. Offer algae wafers, boiled zucchini and cucumber daily, with very rare (one-off) administration of proteins (brine shrimp) to avoid intestinal blockages.
Water Quality: Being native to the Rio Claro (clearwater river), it needs moderate-strong lighting that promotes the growth of good algae (Aufwuchs), strong oxygen exchange and very clean water.
Compatibility and Tankmates: Absolutely unsuitable for coexistence with aggressive cichlids or large Loricariids. Exceptional if paired with small fish: Boraras, Neocaridina (shrimp), small Tetras and Otocinclus.
Aquarium Reproduction: Spawners in miniature crevices or caves. The dynamics are similar to the common Ancistrus (very devoted paternal care), but the broods are small (usually 15-20 eggs) commensurate with the mother's tiny size.
Risks and Diseases: Fragility is linked to competition. If forced into tanks with other larger or faster algae eaters, it silently wastes away. Be careful not to crush it during rock maintenance.
