Species description
Geographical Origin and Habitat: Endemic to the Mana River basin in French Guiana. Found in slow-flowing forest streams with dense margins and leaf debris.
Taxonomy and Morphology: Belongs to the genus Nannacara. Males grow significantly larger, up to 10 cm, while females stay around 5-6 cm.
Social Behavior: Generally peaceful but becomes highly territorial during spawning. The female takes the absolute lead in defending the territory.
Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Males display metallic green-blue shades with a golden-yellow head. Females are beige with dark markings.
Care, breeding and tankmates
Aquarium Setup: Minimum 80-liter tank with dense plants, roots, and caves (coconut shells or pots) to act as shelter.
Diet and Feeding: Carnivorous. Prefers live or frozen foods like brine shrimp and bloodworms. Gradually accepts high-quality sinking pellets.
Water Quality: Keep pH between 5.5 and 7.0, and GH between 2 and 8. Requires effective filtration with gentle water movement.
Compatibility and Cohabitation: Suitable with medium-sized peaceful schooling fish. Avoid other dwarf cichlids or very small fish during breeding.
Aquarium Breeding: Cave spawner. Eggs are laid inside a cave. The female takes sole responsibility for the fry and can be aggressive towards the male.
Risks and Diseases: Sensitive to dirty substrate and high nitrate levels. Keeping the water stable is vital to prevent health issues.
