Species description
Geographical Origin and Habitat: Endemic to the Juruá River basin in Brazil. Lives in slow-flowing forest streams and blackwater tributaries rich in submerged wood and leaf litter.
Taxonomy and Morphology: Member of the Cichlidae family, genus Apistogramma. Closely related to A. cacatuoides, featuring thick lips and elongated anterior rays on the dorsal fin of males.
Social Behavior: Territorial. Best kept in harems where a single male shares a territory with several females, each claiming a small nesting site.
Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Males exhibit complex blue, yellow, and dark patterns with elongated fins. Females are smaller, normally dull grey, turning bright yellow with black markings when nesting.
Care, breeding and tankmates
Aquarium Setup: Set up with fine sand, dried leaves, driftwood branches, and plenty of cave choices (coconuts or caves) to reduce stress.
Diet and Feeding: Carnivorous. Feeds mainly on live and frozen foods like brine shrimp, daphnia, and bloodworms. Dry pellets are rarely preferred.
Water Quality: Demands soft (GH < 6), acidic (pH 5.0-6.8) water with excellent biological filtration and regular small water changes.
Compatibility and Cohabitation: Peaceful with dither fish (small tetras and pencilfish) that inhabit the upper water levels. Do not house with aggressive bottom dwellers.
Aquarium Breeding: Cave breeder. The female lays eggs on the cave ceiling and assumes all parental duties. High water softness is critical for egg hatch.
Risks and Diseases: Highly sensitive to medication and water pollutants. Susceptible to hole-in-the-head disease and skin parasites.
