Species description

Geographical Origin and Habitat: Endemic to the Rio Negro basin in Brazil. Inhabits shallow, sandy blackwater margins filled with leaf litter and branches.

Taxonomy and Morphology: Family Cichlidae. Closely related to Apistogramma pertensis. Males reach 7.5 cm, while females remain under 5 cm.

Social Behavior: Territorial dwarf cichlid, especially during spawning. Forms monogamous pairs or small harems. Requires distinct visual barriers.

Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Males display blue, green, and red hues with a highly developed dorsal fin. Females are smaller and turn bright yellow when breeding.

Care, breeding and tankmates

Aquarium Setup: Minimum 80 liters with fine sand substrate. Provide plenty of caves (coconut shells or clay pots) and tangled roots for territory.

Diet and Feeding: Carnivorous. Feeds on high-quality live and frozen foods (brine shrimp, daphnia, bloodworms). Dry food is rarely accepted initially.

Water Quality: Extremely demanding. Requires soft, acidic blackwater conditions. Keep pH between 4.5 and 6.0, and GH under 5. RO water is highly recommended.

Compatibility and Cohabitation: Safe with peaceful dither fish (pencilfish, tetras). Avoid other territorial bottom-dwellers or aggressive species.

Aquarium Breeding: Cave spawner. Eggs are deposited inside a tight cave. The female cares for the eggs and fry, while the male defends the territory.

Risks and Diseases: High sensitivity to organic waste and fluctuating parameters. Prone to bacterial infections if the substrate is dirty.
