Species description
Geographical Origin and Habitat: Found in the Madeira River drainage in Peru and Bolivia. Lives in slow forest streams covered with logs and leaf litter.
Taxonomy and Morphology: Cichlid of the genus Apistogramma. Easily recognized by the red longitudinal parallel lines. Males up to 6.5 cm, females up to 4.5 cm.
Social Behavior: Territorial but relatively peaceful compared to other cichlids. Forms stable pairs and defends a small area of the substrate.
Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Males show red horizontal stripes on a grayish-blue body. Females are smaller and mostly yellowish.
Care, breeding and tankmates
Aquarium Setup: Minimum 60-liter tank for a pair. Requires fine sand substrate and plenty of protected caves for egg-laying and shelter.
Diet and Feeding: Carnivorous. Offer frozen mysis, brine shrimp, and bloodworms. Can adapt to high-protein sinking granules over time.
Water Quality: Keep pH between 5.5 and 6.5, and GH between 2 and 8. Well-filtered water with regular changes is essential to avoid waste buildup.
Compatibility and Cohabitation: Great with small tetras and calm corydoras. Avoid very active bottom dwellers that compete for space.
Aquarium Breeding: Cave spawner. Spawning takes place in narrow caves. The female diligently handles parenting duties for the fry.
Risks and Diseases: Sensitive to skin parasites and intestinal infections from bad food. Requires a stable aquatic environment.
