Species description

Geographical Origin and Habitat: South America, native to the Rio Negro basin in Brazil. Found in shallow forest streams (igapós) characterized by acidic blackwater, dense leaf litter, and fallen branches.

Taxonomy and Morphology: Part of the Cichlidae family. Standard dwarf cichlid body shape. Males grow to about 6.0 cm, with females being significantly smaller at around 4.0 cm.

Social Behavior: Highly territorial bottom-dweller, particularly during the spawning season. Males hold territories containing one or more nesting sites.

Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Pronounced dimorphism. Males exhibit brilliant violet-blue iridescence on their flanks and pointed dorsal fins with orange edges. Females are yellowish with black stripes.

Care, breeding and tankmates

Aquarium Setup: An 80-liter aquarium with a fine sand bed is required. Decorate with roots, leaf litter, and coconut shells to create plenty of caves. Subdued lighting is highly recommended.

Diet and Feeding: Carnivorous micropredator. Thrives on live or frozen foods such as brine shrimp, daphnia, and cyclops. Dry foods are often refused initially.

Water Quality: Demanding. Requires extremely soft and acidic water (pH 4.5-6.5, hardness 1-5 dGH, conductivity < 100 µS/cm). Highly sensitive to nitrates and parameter shifts.

Compatibility and Cohabitation: Best kept with small, peaceful dither fish like pencilfish and small tetras. Avoid large or aggressive tankmates, especially other territorial bottom dwellers.

Aquarium Breeding: Cave spawner. The female deposits eggs on the ceiling of a cave, assumes a bright yellow brood dress, and takes sole charge of egg and fry care.

Risks and Diseases: Very sensitive to skin parasites and bacterial infections if water parameters are allowed to degrade or if nitrates are not kept low.
