Species description
Geographical Origin and Habitat: Widely distributed in South American river systems. It lives primarily in slow-moving or standing waters near the surface of rivers, creeks, and flooded forests.
Taxonomy and Morphology: Belongs to the family Gasteropelecidae (hatchetfish). Features a highly deep, disc-shaped ventral profile and long, wing-like pectoral fins used for leaping out of the water.
Social Behavior: Peaceful, active, and highly gregarious. It stays strictly at the surface. To reduce stress and exhibit natural behavior, keep them in groups of at least 6 individuals.
Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: The body is a solid silvery color with metallic reflections and a dark lateral line. Genders are very hard to distinguish; females are rounder when viewed from above.
Care, breeding and tankmates
Aquarium Setup: An aquarium of at least 80 liters with a large surface area is required. Floating plants are essential to provide shelter. The tank must have a tightly secured lid.
Diet and Feeding: Surface feeder. Accepts floating flakes, but prefers live insects (like fruit flies/drosophila) and small frozen foods. They rarely feed on food that falls below the surface.
Water Quality: Demands clean, stable water. Keep temperature at 23-28°C, pH 6.0-7.5, and GH 2-12 dGH. Perform regular maintenance to prevent organic buildup.
Compatibility and Cohabitation: Peaceful with middle and bottom-dwelling species like Corydoras, small tetras, and dwarf cichlids. Avoid active surface dwellers that might stress them.
Aquarium Breeding: Extremely rare in captivity. Spawning occurs under floating plants in very soft, acidic water conditions. Remove adults after spawning.
Risks and Diseases: Extreme jump risk; they can easily leap out of any open spaces in the lid. Susceptible to ich if exposed to stress or water quality declines.
