Species description

Geographical Origin and Habitat: Coastal estuaries, tidal flats, and lower reaches of rivers across southern India, Singapore, Malaysia, and Indonesia.

Taxonomy and Morphology: Belongs to the family Gobiidae. Features a robust, compact body with a large head. Grows to approximately 9 cm.

Social Behavior: Territorial, especially toward other males. They establish and defend a cave territory from conspecifics.

Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Pale blue-grey body marked with scattered black spots. Males have longer, more pointed dorsal and anal fins.

Care, breeding and tankmates

Aquarium Setup: Needs an 80-liter tank minimum, decorated with sand, rocks, and caves. Clay pots make excellent territorial shelters.

Diet and Feeding: Carnivorous bottom-feeder. Prefers frozen foods like bloodworms, brine shrimp, and chopped krill. Slowly accepts sinking pellets.

Water Quality: Prefers light brackish water (SG 1.002-1.006) but can adapt to hard, alkaline freshwater. Good filtration is necessary.

Compatibility and Cohabitation: Safe with active, medium-sized brackish fish. Small fish or dwarf shrimps will be targeted as food.

Aquarium Breeding: Cave spawner. Eggs are laid on the cave ceiling. The male guards the clutch until they hatch, which takes about 2 days.

Risks and Diseases: Prone to fin rot and skin infections if the substrate is dirty. Weekly vacuuming of sand is recommended.
