Species description
Geographical Origin and Habitat: Widely distributed in rivers, estuaries, and mangrove forests of Southeast Asia, particularly the Mekong and Chao Phraya basins.
Taxonomy and Morphology: Belongs to the family Toxotidae. Laterally compressed body with a flat dorsal profile, pointed snout, and large eyes positioned near the top of the head.
Social Behavior: Shoaling species that should be kept in groups of 5 or more to distribute minor territorial aggression.
Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Silvery or golden body with 4 to 5 dark, wedge-shaped vertical bars on the upper flanks. No external sexual dimorphism.
Care, breeding and tankmates
Aquarium Setup: Needs a long aquarium with ample surface area and overhanging branches to mimic riverbank vegetation.
Diet and Feeding: Specialized surface carnivore. Feeds on live insects like crickets and flies, as well as frozen mysis and krill.
Water Quality: Prefers slightly brackish water but adapts well to hard freshwater. Excellent biological filtration is required.
Compatibility and Cohabitation: Best kept with similar-sized brackish species like scats, monos, and archerfish. Small tankmates will be eaten.
Aquarium Breeding: Not documented in domestic aquariums; they spawn pelagically in coastal marine waters in the wild.
Risks and Diseases: Exceptional jumpers; a secure and tightly fitting lid is mandatory. Vulnerable to rapid temperature drops.
