Species description

Geographical Origin and Habitat: Primarily native to the Fitzroy River in Western Australia, but also found in the Moluccas. Prefers slow-flowing freshwater streams.

Taxonomy and Morphology: The name 'oligolepis' refers to its fewer lateral scales compared to other Toxotes species. Grows to a maximum length of 15 cm.

Social Behavior: Active and establish a minor pecking order. Schooling is recommended to disperse aggression.

Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Silvery body with dark vertical bars along the upper back, which are shorter and less distinct than in T. jaculatrix. Sessi are identical.

Care, breeding and tankmates

Aquarium Setup: Long tanks with open surface areas and overhanging wood or dry leaves to recreate forest stream banks.

Diet and Feeding: Feeds on surface insects, fruit flies, and small worms. Accepts frozen foods like mysis and artemia.

Water Quality: Adaptable to freshwater and light brackish conditions. Ensure good filtration and moderate water flow.

Compatibility and Cohabitation: Safe with large, fast-swimming tankmates. Keep in a group of its own species.

Aquarium Breeding: Not bred in home aquariums. Spawns in natural river environments during seasonal rains.

Risks and Diseases: High jump risk; secure cover is vital. Susceptible to standard freshwater diseases under stress.
