Species description
Geographical Origin and Habitat: Native to the freshwater wetlands, vegetated billabongs, and forest streams of northern Australia and southern New Guinea.
Taxonomy and Morphology: Considered the most phylogenetically basal archerfish (hence 'primitive'). Deep-bodied, laterally compressed, with larger scales than relatives.
Social Behavior: Generally peaceful and slightly shyer than other archerfish. Shows shoaling behavior in open water areas.
Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Lacks prominent vertical bars, displaying a uniform olive-bronze or silvery-grey body color. No visible sexual dimorphism.
Care, breeding and tankmates
Aquarium Setup: Best kept in a dedicated freshwater paludarium or aquarium with heavy marginal planting and floating cover.
Diet and Feeding: Prefers live insects (fruit flies, small crickets) fed at the surface. Can be trained to take frozen bloodworms and mysis.
Water Quality: Strictly freshwater. Keep pH stable and nitrates very low. Sensitive to organic pollutants.
Compatibility and Cohabitation: Keep with peaceful, similar-sized freshwater fish like rainbowfish. Do not house with aggressive species.
Aquarium Breeding: No successful captive breeding reports exist. Spawning triggers remain unknown.
Risks and Diseases: Highly susceptible to skin fungus if water conditions deteriorate. Needs a very tight lid.
