Species description

Geographical Origin and Habitat: Widely distributed throughout Southern Africa, from Angola to South Africa. It inhabits a variety of water bodies including slow rivers, lakes, ponds, and marshy streams.

Taxonomy and Morphology: Part of the Cichlidae family. Features a stocky body with a large head. Males grow larger than females and develop pointed dorsal and anal fins.

Social Behavior: Polygamous and territorial. Males establish territories to attract females, defending them aggressively against other males.

Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Males display bright blue-green metallic coloration, yellowish bellies, and a red or orange tip on the anal fin. Females remain olive-brown or greyish.

Care, breeding and tankmates

Aquarium Setup: Provide a sandy substrate, rocky caves, and driftwood. Densely plant the borders to allow refuge for submissive individuals.

Diet and Feeding: Omnivorous. Readily accepts dried cichlid pellets and flakes, supplemented with frozen foods like bloodworms and brine shrimp.

Water Quality: Very hardy and tolerant of varying water chemistry. Prefers pH between 6.5-8.0 and a moderate temperature range.

Compatibility and Cohabitation: Best kept in a species-only tank or with robust, active fish that inhabit the upper layers, like larger barbs.

Aquarium Breeding: Maternal mouthbrooder. The female gathers the eggs in her mouth immediately after spawning and incubates them for 10-14 days.

Risks and Diseases: Resilient species, but can develop stress-related issues if males are not kept in a proper harem ratio (1 male to 2-3 females).
