Species description
Geographical Origin and Habitat: Globally found in tropical rivers and estuaries, preferring shady coastal areas with dense overhanging vegetation.
Taxonomy and Morphology: Member of the family Syngnathidae. Body is protected by bony plates. Features a tubular snout used to suck in prey. Grows to 20 cm.
Social Behavior: Peaceful and slow-moving. They hide among reeds and branches. Can be kept in pairs or small, non-competitive groups.
Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Muted brown-green coloration for camouflage. Males possess a brood pouch or patch under the abdomen.
Care, breeding and tankmates
Aquarium Setup: Tall tank with very gentle water movement, planted with vallisneria and floating plants. Soft sand is preferred.
Diet and Feeding: Extremely specialized. Requires constant live foods like freshly hatched artemia nauplii, daphnia, and copepods. Will starve on dry foods.
Water Quality: Low salinity brackish water (SG 1.002-1.005) helps prevent fungal issues. Keep water conditions highly stable.
Compatibility and Cohabitation: Best kept in a species-only tank. Avoid any fast-swimming or aggressive tankmates that will steal their food.
Aquarium Breeding: Male pregnancy. The female transfers eggs to the male's ventral surface, where they are incubated until hatching.
Risks and Diseases: Starvation due to food competition. Susceptible to skin fungus and bacterial infections if water quality is poor.
