Species description
Geographical Origin and Habitat: Western Pacific, distributed in subtropical and tropical waters around Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, and Vietnam. Inhabits seagrass beds and coastal reefs.
Taxonomy and Morphology: Family Syngnathidae. Typical seahorse body armor with bony rings, tubular snout, and prehensile tail adapted to grab objects. Reaches about 15 cm.
Social Behavior: Peaceful, extremely slow-moving, and sedentary. Spends most of the day anchored to structures with its tail, scanning the water column for tiny crustaceans.
Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Dark or grayish body with a distinctive pattern of alternating yellow and black bands on the prehensile tail. Males are recognized by a large ventral brood pouch.
Care, breeding and tankmates
Aquarium Setup: Requires a tank of at least 120 liters with a minimum height of 50 cm. Hitching posts (macroalgae, artificial branches) are essential to allow secure anchoring.
Diet and Feeding: Carnivore. Requires high-quality frozen food (enriched mysis) fed multiple times daily. Live food is often needed initially to stimulate feeding.
Water Quality: Stable parameters and clean water: temperature 22-26°C, pH 8.1-8.4, salinity 1.020-1.025. An efficient protein skimmer is highly recommended.
Compatibility and Cohabitation: Best kept in species-only systems. Do not house with fast or aggressive fish that would outcompete them for food. No stinging corals.
Aquarium Breeding: Well-known and fascinating. The female deposits eggs into the male's pouch; the male carries the pregnancy and gives birth to developed babies.
Risks and Diseases: Prone to bacterial infections (Vibrio) if temperatures exceed 26°C. Gas bubble disease can affect the male's pouch.
