Species description

Geographic Origin and Biotope: Indian Ocean, common in the Red Sea, East African coasts, to the Maldives and Andaman Islands. Populates rocky crevices of seaward coral reefs.

Taxonomy and Morphology: Family Syngnathidae. Genus Dunckerocampus. Extremely elongated tube-shaped body with a slender snout and well-defined round caudal fin. Maximum length about 18 cm.

Social Behavior: Extremely calm and peaceful. Adult males may fight territorially if placed in confined spaces. Performs cleaning services.

Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Spectacular color pattern with dozens of thin alternating red and white transverse bands, red tail fin with yellow circle. Males have flat bellies to host eggs.

Care, breeding and tankmates

Aquarium Setup: Requires a tank of at least 200 liters with low water movement and ample live rock overhangs. Securely screen all powerheads for safety.

Diet and Feeding: Carnivore. Feeds almost exclusively on live zooplankton (copepods). Gradually supplement with high-quality frozen micro-foods fed frequently.

Water Quality: Stable parameters: temperature 22-26°C, pH 8.1-8.4, salinity 1.020-1.025. Keep the water well-oxygenated and clean.

Compatibility and Tankmates: Suitable for specialized reef setups with calm, slow tankmates. Acts as a cleaner, removing parasites from peaceful fish.

Aquarium Reproduction: Very difficult. The female transfers eggs to the male's abdomen. Rearing the offspring is highly complex.

Risks and Diseases: High risk of starvation. Vulnerable to physical injury from powerheads or strongly stinging corals if kept nearby.
