Species description

Geographical Origin and Habitat: Coastal rivers, mangrove creeks, and tidal estuaries of northern Australia and New Guinea.

Taxonomy and Morphology: Family Scatophagidae. Extremely laterally compressed, disc-like body shape. Soft skin with tiny scales. Grows up to 28 cm.

Social Behavior: Schooling species. Keep in a group of 5 or more to disperse energy and avoid stress-induced shyness.

Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Silvery body with dark vertical bars on the upper flanks and distinct black spots lower down. No external dimorphism.

Care, breeding and tankmates

Aquarium Setup: Minimum tank size of 300 liters. Avoid live plants as they are a regular part of their diet. Use plastic plants or smooth rocks.

Diet and Feeding: Voracious omnivore. Requires significant vegetable matter (seaweed, spirulina, blanched peas) along with frozen brine shrimp and mysis.

Water Quality: Adapts to freshwater when young, but adults need brackish (1.010 SG) or marine conditions. Strong filtration is mandatory.

Compatibility and Cohabitation: Great with archerfish and monos. Do not house with quiet, slow-feeding species that can easily be outcompeted.

Aquarium Breeding: Not achieved in home aquariums; requires complex migratory triggers into coastal ocean waters.

Risks and Diseases: Venomous dorsal spines. Painful stings can occur if handled carelessly. Prone to white spot disease under stress.
