Species description

Geographical Origin and Habitat: Cosmopolitan distribution, native to the Americas, Europe, North Africa, and parts of Asia. Found in marshes, wet ditches, and slow-moving river margins.

Taxonomy & Genetics: Belonging to the family Onagraceae, genus Ludwigia. Commonly known as marsh seedbox.

Physical Structure: A fast-growing and heavily branching stem plant. Features opposite, ovate leaves along a pliable stem.

Color & Texture: Color ranges from olive-green to orange, turning deep red under strong lighting. Lower leaf surfaces often exhibit a reddish hue.

Care, breeding and tankmates

Lighting & CO2: Adaptable to medium lighting, but high light is required to achieve deep red coloration. CO2 injection is beneficial but not mandatory.

Nutrition & Substrate: Benefits from a nutrient-rich substrate. Responds very well to regular liquid dosing of iron and general macronutrients.

Water Chemistry: Very hardy. Thrives in pH 6.0-7.5 and a wide hardness range. Prefers cooler to temperate waters between 15 and 26 °C.

Space Management & Placement: Best suited for the background or midground of medium to large aquariums. Plant individual stems a few centimeters apart.

Pruning: Trim stems just above a leaf node to encourage lateral branching, which creates a bushy, dense appearance. Replant cuttings to propagate.

Risks & Diseases: Under low light, it becomes leggy with long internodes and may drop its lower leaves due to shading.
