Species description
Geographical Origin and Habitat: Native to tropical South America, where it grows floating in wetlands, ponds, and slow-moving rivers exposed to full, direct sunlight.
Taxonomy & Genetics: Member of the Onagraceae family. A unique floating/creeping plant characterized by specialized spongy white structures (pneumatophores) that act as floats.
Physical Structure: Stem spreads horizontally across the water surface, growing spongy white floats and standard aquatic roots at the nodes. Leaves form round rosettes.
Color & Texture: Leaves are round, smooth, and glossy green. Under intense light, they develop attractive orange-red tints.
Care, breeding and tankmates
Lighting & CO2: Demands very high light levels. High-intensity lighting is required for survival. Atmospheric CO2 is utilized by the floating leaves, so injection is not crucial.
Nutrition & Substrate: Substrate is not required as it floats. Requires intensive column fertilization with iron, potassium, and micronutrients to support growth.
Water Chemistry: Prefers soft, slightly acidic to neutral water. Temperature range 20-28°C, pH 6.0-7.5. Clean water prevents algae from settling on the roots.
Space Management & Placement: Used strictly as a floating plant. It can quickly cover the surface, so regular thinning is necessary to prevent shading lower plants.
Pruning: Trim the stems regularly to manage spread. Side shoots and cuttings can be left floating to propagate new individual plants.
Risks & Diseases: Rapidly decays and drops leaves if surface light levels are too low or if there is a severe nutrient deficiency in the water column.
