Species description
Geographical Origin and Habitat: Found throughout circumtropical regions. Grows along lake margins, wet ditches, and swampy forest floors in muddy soils.
Taxonomy & Genetics: Known as Ludwigia octovalvis. An erect woody shrub belonging to the family Onagraceae.
Physical Structure: Erect shrubby plant with well-branched stems, becoming woody at the base. Can exceed one meter in height outdoors.
Color & Texture: Lanceolate green leaves with prominent veins and reddish margins. Produces bright yellow flowers with four petals.
Care, breeding and tankmates
Lighting & CO2: Requires direct sunlight or intense artificial lighting. CO2 injection is mostly useful if attempting submerged aquarium growth.
Nutrition & Substrate: Prefers muddy, nutrient-rich soil. In aquariums, it demands clay-based root tabs to support its extensive root system.
Water Chemistry: Prefers acidic to neutral water (pH 5.0 - 7.5). Tolerates a wide temperature range, from 15°C to 30°C.
Space Management & Placement: Only suitable for the background of very large paludariums or garden ponds. Difficult to keep fully submerged long-term.
Pruning: Requires frequent pruning of the main stems to control height and encourage a bushier, branched appearance.
Risks & Diseases: High risk of lower-leaf drop and stem rot if forced fully submerged under poor lighting or shaded conditions.
