Species description
Geographical Origin and Habitat: Distributed across tropical and subtropical regions of Asia, Africa, and Australia. Often found in marshes, ditches, and rice fields.
Taxonomy & Genetics: Genus Ludwigia within the family Onagraceae. Known for developing unique spongy white breathing roots.
Physical Structure: Creeping or floating stems that produce cylindrical, white, spongy pneumatophores (buoys) at the nodes to assist in flotation and respiration.
Color & Texture: Leaves are smooth, elliptic to obovate, and bright light green. Spawns solitary axillary five-petaled cream-white flowers.
Care, breeding and tankmates
Lighting & CO2: Demands very high light intensity. Struggles in standard indoor setups without direct sun or high-PAR LEDs. CO2 injection is highly beneficial.
Nutrition & Substrate: Requires heavy water column fertilization. If planted, a nutrient-rich clay or soil substrate loaded with iron is necessary.
Water Chemistry: Extremely adaptable. Keeps pH 5.5 to 8.0, and temperature 18°C to 30°C. Thrives in nutrient-dense aquatic environments.
Space Management & Placement: Ideal as a floating plant or emergent grower in open aquariums and paludariums. Submerged stems will shoot straight up.
Pruning: Fast-growing species. Trim crawling stems regularly to maintain shape and control spread. Cut shoots can be replanted to propagate.
Risks & Diseases: Rapid decay of lower leaves if light is insufficient or if kept fully submerged without access to the surface air.
