Species description

Ludwigia inclinata 'Green' is a geographic variety or cultivar of the species Ludwigia inclinata, native to the warm wetland regions of Central and South America, particularly the Amazon River basin in Brazil. It inhabits slow-flowing rivers, forest swamps, floodplains, and temporary lagoons. It grows in warm, very soft, acidic waters rich in soluble iron, often under full sun exposure that drives an extremely rapid metabolic rate. It belongs to the Onagraceae family. Ludwigia inclinata is a highly polymorphic species with several variants (including the well-known var.

Care, breeding and tankmates

Very demanding: requires soft (KH 0-8 dKH, ideally below 4 dKH) and acidic water (pH 4.5-7.0, ideally below 6.5). The optimal temperature is between 18°C and 30°C, preferring stable values around 24-26°C. It does not tolerate hard water. The main risk is the decay of growth tips due to trace element deficiencies (particularly boron and iron) or insufficient CO2. It is highly susceptible to green algae or hair algae infestations if column nutrients are unbalanced relative to the intense lighting.

Geographic Origin and Distribution

Plant profile

Placement
Midground

Optimal placement for Ludwigia inclinata "Green" is as a background. Careful positioning allows it to receive adequate light and flow. This strategic placement ensures it does not overshadow smaller plants while exhibiting its best form.

Botanical form
Stem

Botanically, Ludwigia inclinata "Green" is characterized as a stem plant. Its unique physiological traits make it a fascinating addition to the ecosystem. The leaf structure and overall form adapt closely to its submerged environment.

Growth
very-fast

The growth rate of Ludwigia inclinata "Green" is generally considered very fast. This steady development necessitates a well-planned maintenance schedule. Adjusting environmental factors can slightly speed up or slow down this rate.

Substrate
High

Ludwigia inclinata 'Green' is a highly demanding stem plant that greatly benefits from an active, nutrient-rich soil to sustain its exceptionally fast growth rate. It requires a deep substrate bed of at least 5 to 6 centimeters, allowing its vigorous root system to anchor the tall, buoyant stems securely. An aquasoil rich in nitrogen and essential macronutrients will ensure thick stem development and lush, vibrant green foliage. Without a fertile substrate, the plant may struggle to maintain its lower leaves and is prone to stunting, despite water column fertilization.

Column fertilization
Recommended

For column fertilization, Ludwigia inclinata "Green" prefers a rich dosing regimen. Liquid fertilizers are efficiently absorbed through its submerged surfaces. Consistent daily or weekly dosing ensures steady nutrient availability.

Root fertilization
None

Regarding root fertilization, it is absolutely true that Ludwigia inclinata "Green" requires a nutrient-rich substrate. A quality aquasoil or root tabs can significantly boost its long-term health. The root system plays an active role in stabilizing the plant and absorbing minerals.

Trimming
Occasional

Maintenance for Ludwigia inclinata "Green" primarily involves frequent topping. Using sharp aquascaping scissors ensures clean cuts that heal quickly. Regular pruning encourages a more compact and aesthetically pleasing form.

Propagation
Cuttings

Propagation of Ludwigia inclinata "Green" is typically achieved through cuttings. This method is straightforward and yields a high success rate. Newly propagated sections should be planted with sufficient space to establish themselves.

Sensitivity
Moderate

Ludwigia inclinata "Green" is particularly sensitive to shading and poor flow. Sudden changes in water chemistry can trigger negative reactions or melting. Maintaining a stable environment is the best preventative measure against these issues.

Layout role
Background, Midground

In an aquascape, Ludwigia inclinata "Green" serves excellently as a bright green backdrop. Its visual characteristics draw the eye and create depth within the layout. It pairs well with contrasting textures to enhance the overall composition.
