Species description
Ludwigia repens is naturally distributed across the southeastern United States, Mexico, and parts of Central and South America, thriving in a variety of aquatic and semi-aquatic environments. This species is commonly found along the edges of slow-moving streams, ponds, and marshes, where it can grow submerged or emersed. The 'Rubin' cultivar, however, is a selectively bred form developed specifically for its intensified The defining characteristic of Ludwigia repens 'Rubin' is its intense, deep ruby-red to burgundy coloration, which can vary in saturation depending on light, CO2, and nutrient availability. The upper surface of the leaves typically displays this rich red, while the undersides may retain a slightly greener or paler red hue. The leaves have a smooth, somewhat waxy texture, contributing to their vibrant, light-reflecting appearance within the aquarium.
Care, breeding and tankmates
Ludwigia repens 'Rubin' adapts well to a relatively broad range of water parameters, making it suitable for many community aquariums. It thrives in temperatures between 20-28°C (68-82°F), with a slightly acidic to neutral pH range of 6.0-7.5. A carbonate hardness (KH) of 2-12 dKH is generally acceptable, though stable parameters within these ranges are always preferred to avoid unnecessary stress on the plant. Consistent water quality is key to vibrant growth. While generally robust, Ludwigia repens 'Rubin' can face challenges such as algae growth on its leaves if nutrient levels are unbalanced or light is excessive without adequate CO2.

This plant is best placed in the midground to background, depending on how often it is trimmed. Its deep red color makes it a powerful focal point in the aquarium. It should be planted in groups to create a bold, colorful statement.
It is known for its stunning, deep wine-red leaves that are slightly narrower than the standard L. repens. The entire plant, including the stems, takes on this rich coloration under strong light. The stems are somewhat rigid and grow upright.
It has a moderate to fast growth rate when provided with ideal conditions. Regular pruning is necessary to maintain its shape and prevent it from reaching the surface too quickly. Its steady growth makes it relatively easy to manage.
Ludwigia repens 'Rubin' requires a deeply enriched substrate packed with macronutrients and iron to sustain its signature deep red foliage. The plant's aggressive root system anchors best in a fine, porous aqua soil that facilitates optimal nutrient exchange. A substrate layer of around 2.5 inches (6 cm) is ideal to prevent the plant from floating and to encourage robust lower stems.
A comprehensive liquid fertilizer program is essential. High levels of iron and micronutrients are necessary to sustain the deep red pigmentation. Adequate macronutrients ensure robust, healthy stems and leaves.
A nutrient-rich aquasoil or the addition of root tabs is highly beneficial. The plant develops a strong root network that draws heavily from the substrate. Good root nutrition leads to thicker stems and larger, healthier leaves.
Trim the plant frequently to encourage a bushy, dense growth habit. Cut the stems above a node, and the plant will produce multiple side shoots. Replant the healthy tops to expand the grouping.
Propagation is easily achieved through stem cuttings. Snip the top portions of healthy stems and plant them into the substrate. They will establish roots quickly and continue growing.
It is sensitive to low light, which will cause the deep red color to fade to a brownish-green. It also requires good water circulation to deliver nutrients efficiently and prevent algae. Shading of the lower leaves will lead to leaf drop.
L. repens 'Rubin' is one of the best plants for creating a striking, deep red focal point. Its dark coloration contrasts dramatically with bright green plants. It is a staple in Dutch-style aquascaping for its reliable and intense color.
