Kishi's Bucephalandra

Geographical Origin and Habitat: Endemic to Borneo. Grows as a rheophyte on rocky surfaces in fast-flowing jungle streams subject to flash flooding.

Taxonomy & Genetics: Member of the Araceae family. Officially described as Bucephalandra kishii, often traded under the name 'Skeleton King' or 'Achilles'.

Physical Structure: Strong, woody rhizome with tough, wavy-edged, lanceolate leaves featuring highly pronounced primary veins.

Color & Texture: Dark green to near-black with blue-purple metallic iridescence. Leaves have a distinct, deeply ribbed skeletal texture.

Lighting & CO2: Low to medium light. CO2 injection is highly recommended to encourage healthy growth and vivid coloration.

Nutrition & Substrate: Epiphytic. Never bury the rhizome in gravel or soil. Secure to rocks or wood using thread or gel superglue.

Water Chemistry: Requires stable parameters and good water flow to prevent detritus from settling on the slow-growing leaves.

Space Management & Placement: Best placed in the midground as a focal point on hardscape elements.

Pruning: Trim older leaves at the base and cut the rhizome with a sharp blade for propagation.

Risks & Diseases: Vulnerable to rot and melting if the rhizome is buried or if water parameters shift suddenly.
