Species description
Geographical Origin and Habitat: Lake Malawi (Mozambican coasts: Minos Reef, Nkhungu Reef). Inhabits exclusively rocky areas between 5 and 15 meters (16-50 feet) deep (Mbuna environment).
Taxonomy and Morphology: Red Zebra Cichlid (Metriaclima estherae). Cichlid with typical Mbuna features: rounded skull profile, fleshy lower mouth, and jaws specially designed to graze the rocky algal carpet.
Social Behavior: Extreme intraspecific territoriality. One male will vigorously patrol a submarine rock zone chasing away other males. They must be kept in harems (1M:3F) to mitigate the relentless pursuit of females.
Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Polychromatism (Morphs). There are 3 main colorations. "Red/Red" Morph: male and female are vivid orange (the most widespread in trade). "Blue/Red" Morph: light blue male (cobalt type) and orange-red female. Males have conspicuous "egg-spots" (false ocelli) on the anal fin.
Care, breeding and tankmates
Aquarium Setup: Minimum 120-130 cm (48-52 inches). The tank must be "full of calcareous rocks", creating narrow passages and dens (Controlled overcrowding - Overstocking). Intense lighting will encourage the growth of algae on the stones, which the fish will graze happily.
Diet and Feeding: Algae grazer (Herbivore). Algae-based food, Spirulina flakes/pellets, boiled zucchini. Live or frozen feed based on beef will lead them to certain death from intestinal swelling.
Water Quality: Strict Malawi parameters: Ph always alkaline (above 7.8, ideally 8.2), hard water. Weekly water changes of 40-50% are mandatory to keep nitrates low in the overstocked Mbuna environment.
Compatibility and Cohabitation: Only for Malawi-Mbuna tanks. Insert together with Cynotilapia, Labeotropheus or other Metriaclima (but NOT with M. callainos or species with identical coloration, to prevent lethal visual territorial battles and hybridizations).
Aquarium Breeding: Fecund oral incubator. The "T" dance on the sand bottom convinces the female to take the eggs in her mouth. The male shows the "egg-spots" on the anal fin to induce her to fertilize them before she swallows them. Incubation of about 3 weeks.
Risks and Diseases: Indiscriminate hybridization. M. estherae is among the most abused species in cross-breeding farms: most "Red Zebras" in stores are hybrids (artificial "Marmalade Cats"). For genuine behavior, wild strains (F1/F2) are needed.
