Species description
This Echinodorus cultivar, known as 'Ozelot Grün' (Green Ozelot), is a stabilized horticultural hybrid created by Hans Barth in Dessau, Germany. It does not exist in nature. Its genetic parent species come from the tropical regions of South America, where they grow in slow-moving rivers and marshy areas rich in light and nutrients. It is a registered hybrid belonging to the family Alismataceae. It is derived from the cross between Echinodorus schlueteri 'Leopard' and Echinodorus 'Barthii'.
Care, breeding and tankmates
It is an extremely adaptable plant. It tolerates temperatures between 15°C and 30°C, with an optimal pH between 5.0 and 7.0 and a water hardness from very soft to hard (KH 0-21 dKH). It is a robust plant that rarely gets sick. The main risks are related to micronutrient (iron) deficiencies, which manifest as the loss of dark variegation, and the accumulation of algae on older leaves if they are not properly pruned.

This plant is best suited for the midground or background of the aquarium, depending on the tank size. Echinodorus 'Ozelot Grün' creates a stunning focal point with its broad leaves and striking appearance. Ensure it has enough space so it does not overshadow smaller neighboring plants.
Characterized by its strong rosette form, Echinodorus 'Ozelot Grün' produces sturdy stems and expansive leaves. Its foliage often features distinct veining and can vary in color depending on the specific lighting conditions. This architectural plant adds a sense of depth and structure to any aquascape.
Echinodorus 'Ozelot Grün' exhibits a moderate growth rate when provided with optimal conditions. Under high light and CO2 supplementation, its growth can accelerate significantly. Consistent pruning may be required to keep its size manageable in smaller aquariums.
The green variant of the Ozelot sword demands a highly fertile, deep substrate to sustain its vigorous growth and characteristic markings. It develops a vigorous and extensive root system that acts as a powerful anchor and the main conduit for absorbing essential minerals. A substrate depth of at least 7 centimeters, featuring aqua-soil or laterite, is optimal for root health. Frequent supplementation with solid root fertilizers is necessary to maintain its health and prevent nutrient exhaustion in the soil.
While primarily a root feeder, Echinodorus 'Ozelot Grün' benefits greatly from water column fertilization. Dosing liquid fertilizers rich in trace elements will enhance leaf coloration and overall vitality. Careful balancing of nutrients in the water column helps prevent algae issues on its broad leaves.
A nutrient-rich substrate is essential for the long-term health of Echinodorus 'Ozelot Grün'. The use of root tabs or a soil-based substrate will support its extensive root system. Deep root fertilization is the most effective way to ensure the plant receives adequate macronutrients.
Trimming Echinodorus 'Ozelot Grün' involves removing older or damaged leaves at the base of the rosette. This encourages the plant to direct its energy into producing fresh, healthy foliage. Avoid cutting the leaves halfway; always trim as close to the crown as possible.
Propagation of Echinodorus 'Ozelot Grün' typically occurs through adventitious plants that develop on flower stalks. Once these plantlets have formed their own roots and a few leaves, they can be separated and replanted. Dividing a mature, healthy rhizome is another viable propagation method.
This species is generally hardy, but Echinodorus 'Ozelot Grün' can be sensitive to sudden changes in water parameters. It may melt if transitioning between emersed and submersed forms, but will quickly recover. Ensure stable temperature and water chemistry to avoid stress.
In an aquascape, Echinodorus 'Ozelot Grün' serves as a magnificent specimen plant that anchors the layout. Its broad foliage contrasts beautifully with delicate stem plants and carpeting species. It is ideal for creating a natural, wild look or providing shelter for aquatic fauna.
