Species description
Ranalisma rostratum originates from the tropical and subtropical regions of Asia, specifically found in countries such as Vietnam, China, and Thailand. It typically thrives in shallow aquatic habitats, including rice paddies, ditches, marshes, and the margins of slow-moving water bodies. In these natural environments, it often develops in both submerged and emergent forms, demonstrating remarkable adaptability to varying water levels and sunlight availability. This ecological background makes it particularly well-suited for the artificial aquatic environment, provided optimal growth conditions are replicated. Ranalisma rostratum belongs to the Alismataceae family, a group of monocotyledonous aquatic plants well-known for their presence in wetlands and aquatic environments.
Care, breeding and tankmates
Ranalisma rostratum thrives in stable and well-maintained water conditions. Keeping the temperature between 20.0 and 28.0 C is ideal, with extremes potentially causing stress to the plant. Water pH should be maintained in a slightly acidic to neutral range, between 6.0 and 7.5, to optimize nutrient absorption and overall health. The ideal carbonate hardness (KH) ranges from 2 to 12, indicating tolerance to a moderate range of hardness. It is important to avoid drastic fluctuations in these parameters by monitoring them regularly with water tests and performing consistent partial water changes to ensure a stable and pollutant-free environment.

An excellent foreground plant. It naturally spreads via runners across the substrate to create a low, grassy lawn effect. Best planted directly in the open foreground.
A small rosette plant visually resembling Sagittaria subulata or Helanthium tenellum. It features narrow, pointed, light green leaves that curve slightly outwards.
Fast-growing when fully established under good light and consistent CO2 injection. It will quickly cover the open substrate, forming a dense carpet.
While liquid fertilization helps overall health, it draws the vast majority of its required nutrients through its extensive root system in the substrate.
A nutrient-rich substrate or the addition of root tabs are absolutely essential for it to form a dense, lush, and continuous carpet.
Rarely requires trimming of individual leaves. Maintenance mostly involves pruning the runners if it starts spreading into unwanted areas or overtaking other plants.
Propagates prolifically and automatically through subterranean runners. Simply snip the runner, separate the daughter plantlet, and replant it wherever desired.
Can easily melt or stunt if heavily shaded by taller background plants. Ensure the foreground area remains well-lit and free of accumulating detritus.
Perfect for creating a natural, grassy foreground carpet in Nature Aquarium layouts. It provides a soft, lawn-like base that transitions beautifully into hardscape.
