Species description
This plant is native to Central America and northern South America, populating shallow aquatic areas such as stream banks, ditches, and wet plains. It is accustomed to seasonal fluctuations in water levels, growing submerged during floods and emerging to flower when the water recedes. It belongs to the family Alismataceae. It is a pure botanical species of the genus Echinodorus, not derived from artificial horticultural crosses. Its stable genetics guarantee a consistently oval shape of the leaves, a distinctive character that gives the species its name.
Care, breeding and tankmates
Adapts to temperatures between 18°C and 28°C. The optimal pH ranges from 6.0 to 7.5, with an ideal carbonate hardness between 2 and 15 dKH, tolerating different chemical ranges well. It is prone to iron deficiency which manifests as leaf chlorosis. The thick and leathery leaves can accumulate green spot algae if the tank parameters are not balanced or if the lighting is excessive.

This plant is best suited for the midground or background of the aquarium, depending on the tank size. Echinodorus ovalis creates a stunning focal point with its broad leaves and striking appearance. Ensure it has enough space so it does not overshadow smaller neighboring plants.
Characterized by its strong rosette form, Echinodorus ovalis produces sturdy stems and expansive leaves. Its foliage often features distinct veining and can vary in color depending on the specific lighting conditions. This architectural plant adds a sense of depth and structure to any aquascape.
Echinodorus ovalis exhibits a moderate growth rate when provided with optimal conditions. Under high light and CO2 supplementation, its growth can accelerate significantly. Consistent pruning may be required to keep its size manageable in smaller aquariums.
Echinodorus ovalis relies heavily on a nutrient-abundant substrate to support its broad, oval foliage and robust structure. The plant forms a dense, fleshy root mass that quickly spreads throughout the aquarium bottom to secure its position and forage for nutrients. A substrate thickness of 5 to 8 centimeters is optimal, combining inert gravel with a rich base layer of aquatic soil. Consistent use of root capsules is highly advised to maintain its vigorous development and prevent stunted growth.
While primarily a root feeder, Echinodorus ovalis benefits greatly from water column fertilization. Dosing liquid fertilizers rich in trace elements will enhance leaf coloration and overall vitality. Careful balancing of nutrients in the water column helps prevent algae issues on its broad leaves.
A nutrient-rich substrate is essential for the long-term health of Echinodorus ovalis. The use of root tabs or a soil-based substrate will support its extensive root system. Deep root fertilization is the most effective way to ensure the plant receives adequate macronutrients.
Trimming Echinodorus ovalis involves removing older or damaged leaves at the base of the rosette. This encourages the plant to direct its energy into producing fresh, healthy foliage. Avoid cutting the leaves halfway; always trim as close to the crown as possible.
Propagation of Echinodorus ovalis typically occurs through adventitious plants that develop on flower stalks. Once these plantlets have formed their own roots and a few leaves, they can be separated and replanted. Dividing a mature, healthy rhizome is another viable propagation method.
This species is generally hardy, but Echinodorus ovalis can be sensitive to sudden changes in water parameters. It may melt if transitioning between emersed and submersed forms, but will quickly recover. Ensure stable temperature and water chemistry to avoid stress.
In an aquascape, Echinodorus ovalis serves as a magnificent specimen plant that anchors the layout. Its broad foliage contrasts beautifully with delicate stem plants and carpeting species. It is ideal for creating a natural, wild look or providing shelter for aquatic fauna.
