Species description

Synnema triflorum, though often linked taxonomically to species within the Hygrophila genus, is typically understood to originate from Southeast Asian wetlands. In its natural habitat, this plant thrives in marshy areas, slow-moving streams, and the edges of ponds, often growing submerged or emergent. These environments are characterized by soft to moderately hard water and rich substrates, providing the necessary conditions for its robust development. Its adaptability to varying water levels and nutrient availability makes it a resilient species in its native range. Synnema triflorum belongs to the diverse family Acanthaceae, which encompasses a wide array of tropical and subtropical plants.

Care, breeding and tankmates

Synnema triflorum thrives in soft to moderately hard water conditions, tolerating a KH range of 2-12 and a pH between 6.0 and 7.5. Maintaining stable water parameters within these ranges is crucial for its long-term health, as sudden fluctuations can induce stress or melting. A water temperature range of 20-28°C is ideal, promoting vigorous metabolism and consistent growth throughout the year. Regular water changes are essential to replenish trace elements and remove accumulated waste products, ensuring a clean and stable aquatic environment. While generally robust, Synnema triflorum can be susceptible to common aquarium issues such as nutrient deficiencies, which manifest as yellowing leaves (iron, nitrogen) or stunted growth.

Geographic Origin and Distribution

This species originates from: Southeast Asia.

Plant profile

Placement
Midground

Best placed in the background or midground due to its rapid vertical and horizontal growth. It requires plenty of space to expand without overshadowing smaller, slower-growing neighbors. It can also be floated, where it will develop a different leaf structure. Planting stems individually rather than in bunches prevents the lower leaves from rotting.

Botanical form
Stem

Exhibits highly variable leaf morphology; under strong light, the leaves become deeply pinnatifid and fern-like. In lower light or emersed conditions, the leaves are broader and more solid. The stems are robust and can grow quite thick to support the expansive foliage. Its bright green, lacy appearance is its most defining characteristic.

Growth
Medium

Extremely fast-growing under ideal conditions with strong light and abundant nutrients. Its vigorous growth makes it an excellent choice for newly set up aquariums to help combat algae by absorbing excess nutrients. It requires frequent trimming to keep it manageable. It can easily grow several inches a week and reach the surface quickly.

Substrate
High

Synnema triflorum develops a robust and expansive root system that benefits greatly from a nutrient-rich substrate. A generous substrate depth of at least 5 to 7 centimeters is recommended to allow the thick roots to spread and anchor the fast-growing stems. While it can adapt to inert gravel supplemented with root tabs, a dedicated aqua soil will maximize its vigorous growth and nutrient absorption.

Column fertilization
Recommended

Benefits greatly from regular dosing of liquid fertilizers into the water column. Because of its fast growth rate, it can quickly deplete the water of available nutrients. Consistent supplementation ensures the leaves remain a vibrant, healthy green. It is an excellent indicator plant for nitrate levels, turning yellow when levels are too low.

Root fertilization
Recommended

Develops an extensive root system and appreciates a nutrient-rich substrate. While it can absorb significant nutrients from the water, root tabs will promote stronger, thicker stems and more robust overall growth. It is very adaptable to different substrate types, from fine sand to coarse gravel. A nutrient-rich base will significantly speed up its establishment.

Trimming
Occasional

Highly tolerant of aggressive pruning and can be cut back significantly when it overgrows its space. Topping the plant encourages lateral branching, creating a bushier appearance. The lower, shaded portions may lose their leaves and should be removed if they become unsightly. Uprooting and replanting the tops is recommended every few months to rejuvenate the stand.

Propagation
Cuttings

Easily propagated by stem cuttings; simply snip off a healthy top or side shoot and replant it in the substrate. It will quickly develop roots and establish a new plant. Even a single floating leaf with a piece of stem can sometimes sprout new growth. Leaving the bottom portion rooted will almost always result in multiple new side shoots.

Sensitivity
low

Very hardy and adaptable, but rapid changes in water parameters can cause temporary leaf drop. It is sensitive to some medications and liquid carbon treatments if overdosed. In very low light, its leaves will lose their attractive fern-like shape. It rarely suffers from algae issues due to its incredibly fast growth rate.

Layout role
Midground, Background

Serves as an excellent background filler or a fast-growing volume plant in nature and jungle-style aquariums. Its finely textured leaves provide a beautiful contrast against broad-leaved species like Echinodorus or Anubias. It is often used to quickly establish biological balance in new tanks. The lacy texture adds a soft, billowing effect to the background.
