Species description

Nomaphila corymbosa, a species widely celebrated in aquascaping, originates from the diverse aquatic ecosystems of Southeast Asia, particularly thriving in countries like Thailand and India. In its natural habitat, this resilient plant can be found growing both submerged in slow-moving rivers, streams, and ponds, and emersed along their muddy banks, often flowering profusely above the waterline. This adaptability to varying environmental conditions is a key factor in its popularity and relative ease of cultivation in aquariums, where it mimics its native propensity for both terrestrial and aquatic life stages. Belonging to the family Acanthaceae, Nomaphila corymbosa is botanically distinct, though it is frequently encountered and widely known in the hobby as *Hygrophila corymbosa* due to historical classifications and common usage. This classification places it within a large family of flowering plants renowned for their ornamental value and diverse growth forms, many of which are also popular aquarium plants.

Care, breeding and tankmates

Maintaining stable water parameters is key to the thriving of Nomaphila corymbosa; it prefers temperatures ranging from 20 to 28 degrees Celsius, mimicking its tropical origins. A pH range of 6.0 to 7.5 is ideal, accommodating a slightly acidic to neutral environment, while a carbonate hardness (KH) between 2 and 12 dKH provides adequate buffering capacity without being overly restrictive. Consistency in these parameters prevents stress and promotes steady, vigorous growth, making it suitable for a wide array of community aquariums. While generally robust, Nomaphila corymbosa can exhibit signs of stress or nutrient deficiency if conditions are not optimal. Yellowing leaves can indicate an iron deficiency, while holes might suggest potassium deficiency.

Geographic Origin and Distribution

Plant profile

Placement
Midground

Because of its large leaf size and robust stems, it is best placed in the background of most aquariums. In very large or deep tanks, it can serve as a midground focal point. It should be given plenty of space, as its broad leaves can easily shade out smaller plants growing beneath it.

Botanical form
Stem

It features thick, rigid stems and large, opposite, lanceolate to ovate leaves that are bright green. Under intense light, the uppermost leaves may develop a slight bronze or reddish tint. When it breaches the surface, it easily transitions to emersed growth, producing harder leaves and eventually small purple flowers.

Growth
Medium

The growth rate is very fast, particularly in nutrient-rich water with strong lighting. It can grow several inches a week and will quickly breach the water surface if left unchecked. Even in low-tech setups without CO2, it maintains a respectable and steady growth pace.

Substrate
High

Nomaphila corymbosa produces an extensive and powerful root system that requires a deep, nutrient-rich substrate for optimal health. The thick roots firmly anchor the large, heavy stems and vigorously absorb macronutrients to support the plant's rapid growth and broad leaves. A substrate depth of at least 3 to 4 inches, composed of high-quality aquasoil or heavily supplemented gravel, is necessary to accommodate this large root mass. Regular use of root tabs is highly recommended to prevent nutrient exhaustion and maintain the plant's robust structure.

Column fertilization
Recommended

It draws a significant amount of nutrients from the water column, making liquid fertilization very effective. Potassium supplementation is particularly critical to prevent the common pinhole issue in older leaves. General all-in-one fertilizers usually provide sufficient nutrition for this hardy species.

Root fertilization
Recommended

While it thrives on column dosing, it also develops a massive, deep root system and benefits from a rich substrate. Root tabs can provide a long-lasting nutrient reserve, resulting in significantly thicker stems and larger leaves. A strong root system also helps anchor this large plant securely.

Trimming
Occasional

Trimming is essential and frequent due to its rapid growth. You can cut the stem anywhere; the remaining lower portion will readily sprout multiple new side shoots, creating a very bushy appearance. The thick stems can be tough, so use sharp, sturdy scissors to avoid crushing the plant tissue.

Propagation
Cuttings

Propagation is extremely simple and foolproof; just cut a stem and plant it in the substrate. Almost any piece of the stem with a node will root and grow into a new plant. You can also replant the side shoots that develop after trimming the main stem.

Sensitivity
Moderate

This plant is incredibly hardy and tolerates a wide range of water parameters, making it excellent for beginners. It is not sensitive to typical pH or hardness fluctuations. The main issue to watch for is potassium deficiency, which is easily remedied with proper fertilization.

Layout role
Midground, Background

It serves as an excellent, fast-growing background filler that quickly establishes a green, jungle-like look. Its large leaves provide great hiding spots for fish and breaking up sightlines in community tanks. It is also very effective at taking up excess nutrients, helping to combat algae.
