Species description
This beautiful species is native to the tropical rainforests of South America, particularly in Peru. In its natural habitat, it grows as an understory plant, spreading across the damp, shaded forest floor where temperatures are warm and humidity is high year-round. It is not an aquatic plant, but rather a terrestrial creeper adapted to high humidity. Belonging to the family Acanthaceae, this cultivar is scientifically known as Fittonia verschaffeltii 'Argyroneura'. The genetics of this plant have been cultivated to maximize the striking contrasted The dark green leaves are decorated with a dense network of silvery-white or ivory veins.
Care, breeding and tankmates
If grown in a paludarium with its roots in contact with water, it prefers soft to moderately hard water with a pH of 6.0 to 7.5. Maintain temperatures between 18°C and 28°C (64°F - 82°F). The primary risk is root rot from oversaturated soil. If humidity levels drop too low, the leaves will quickly wilt and drop. Regular misting is essential.

It must be placed in the terrarium or the dry land area of a paludarium. It will not survive long-term under water and will quickly drown. Ensure it has plenty of indirect light and high humidity.
It is characterized by stunning bright green leaves patterned with prominent silvery-white veins. The contrasting veins give it a very striking, almost artificial appearance. It grows in a compact, creeping habit close to the soil surface.
It exhibits a moderate growth rate in ideal high-humidity, terrestrial conditions. With proper care, it quickly spreads to form a dense ground cover. Maintaining consistent warmth and moisture encourages faster development.
Water column fertilization is completely irrelevant since it is a terrestrial species. Submerging it in fertilized aquarium water will only lead to rot. All feeding should be directed to the soil.
It thrives with occasional root feeding in a moist terrarium soil mixture. A rich substrate containing organic matter provides an excellent foundation. Ensure the soil is loose enough to allow the roots to breathe.
Regular pruning helps maintain a compact, bushy shape and prevents leggy growth. Pinching off the tips encourages the plant to branch out laterally. Remove any yellowing or damaged leaves immediately to prevent disease.
Take healthy stem cuttings and place them in a glass of water or directly into moist soil. High humidity during the rooting phase is critical for success. Roots usually appear within 10 to 14 days.
It is extremely sensitive to prolonged submersion and will quickly deteriorate in an aquarium. Dry air and cold drafts are also highly detrimental to its health. It requires a stable, humid microclimate to truly flourish.
It adds a brilliant white and green contrast to the emergent sections of paludariums. The silver veins draw the eye, making it a great focal point on land. It perfectly complements dark rocks and natural wood pieces.
