- It is overwhelmingly used as a foreground carpeting plant, where it creates a lush, rolling green lawn. It is also an excellent choice for planting high on hardscape, where it will elegantly cascade down over rocks or wood like a waterfall. Its versatile creeping habit makes it a favorite in Iwagumi and nature aquarium layouts.

- It features very small, round, bright green leaves that grow tightly along creeping stems. The plant forms a dense, interwoven mat that hugs the substrate closely when given adequate light. Unlike some other foreground plants, it develops a surprisingly strong root system for its size.

- With high light and CO2, 'Monte Carlo' exhibits a moderately fast growth rate, spreading steadily across the substrate. It is generally easier to grow and slightly faster than Hemianthus callitrichoides 'Cuba', making it a popular alternative. Regular trimming is necessary once established to prevent the carpet from becoming too thick and lifting from the substrate.

- A high-quality, fine-grained aqua soil is the absolute best substrate for 'Monte Carlo', allowing its fine root system to anchor easily and spread quickly. It can be grown in sand or fine gravel with heavy root tab supplementation, but carpeting will be much slower. A nutrient-rich base is key to fueling its horizontal runner network.

- Regular dosing of comprehensive liquid fertilizers is highly beneficial, as the plant absorbs significant nutrients directly from the water. Maintaining consistent levels of potassium and trace elements ensures healthy new growth and robust runners. Good water flow is important to deliver these nutrients evenly across the dense carpet.

- Because it forms a dense, rooting mat, substrate nutrition is a major factor in its long-term success. The extensive root system draws heavily from the aqua soil to support its continuous expansion. As the aqua soil ages, inserting root tabs specifically designed for foreground plants can rejuvenate a struggling carpet.

- Regular trimming is essential to prevent the carpet from becoming too thick, which can cause the lower layers to die off and uproot. Trim horizontally with curved scissors to keep the mat low and dense. Trimmings can be replanted to start new patches.
- Propagation

- Propagation is very easy by dividing the plant into small plugs and planting them in a grid pattern across the desired area. As it grows, the runners from the individual plugs will intertwine and form a solid carpet. You can also simply trim the top layers of an established carpet and replant the trimmings.

- It is somewhat sensitive to sudden changes in water parameters and extreme temperatures. Algae can easily smother its small leaves if nutrient imbalances occur. It is generally hardy but may melt slightly during initial acclimation.
